A Kerala houseboat is about 67 to 100 feet in length and has a width of around 13 to 18 feet in the middle. The house boats have fully furnished single, double and triple bed rooms with sundeck, comfortable chairs, kitchen and toilet with A/C. In addition there is also separate rest room for the crew. Traditional lanterns are used as lights. The crew includes a chef, Captain & life Guard. The cuisine is traditional Kerala flavor with the local specialties; delicious fish and prawns. There are single bedroom houseboats for two people and two bedroom houseboats for four people and three bedroom houseboats for 6 people and 5 bedroom houseboats for 10 People.

  Night Stay in the houseboat: - check in Time is 06:00 Pm with Tea & Snacks 30 minutes cruising through the backwater. Houseboat is halting at 06:30 Pm, 09:00 Pm dinner time. Morning 07:30 Am starts cruise through the backwaters & check out alleppey at 10:00 AM.

While cruising through these canals in a Houseboat we would come across many interesting aspects of day to day life in the land as well as on water.

Sip Tender Coconut
Refresh yourself with a sip of nature’s Rejuvenating nectar- the cool tender coconut and a scoop of its soft white flesh. Nutrition as its natural best, it is abundantly found along the banks of the backwaters.

Toddy Tapping
Toddy or Kallu is an alcoholic beverage in Kerala derived from palm or coconut trees. The flower of the palm is cot in its bud and is covered with a pot. It is normally an evening business and by the next morning, the pot will be full of white frothy toddy. Toddy is the sap taken from the inflorescence of the coconut tree. The technique of extracting the toddy is an indigenous technique known only to people who have specialized in this and them continuous to pass it on to next generations. The sap is collected in a pot made of clay. This is taken to the toddy shop and allowed to ferment for a day and is ready to be served to the customers.

Learn Duck Farming
Duck farming is a way of life for the people living by the backwaters. Befriend a local to know more about these water birds that are an integral part of the rural landscape.

Paddy Farming
The paddy fields in these backwater regions of alleppey stand below the sea level where the farming is done. Women folk are totally involved in farming. Sickle is the main instrument used for harvest by them. Extensive land has been reclaimed from the backwaters and is protected by dikes built around it. There are many similarities between QST & R Block Kayals ( backwaters) of Kuttanad and the famous dikes of Holland.

Discover the Secrets of boat building
Find out all about the making of snake boats, which are 100 ft long, seats over 90 oarsmen & is built without using even a single nail. The villagers at Alumkadavu in Kollam & Champakulam in Alleppey specialize in making these boats.
 
Backwater Fishing
Various methods are employed for fishing in backwaters, rivers, deep sea by using nets, Chinese fishing nets, hooks etc. it’s a treat to watch the rows of Chinese fishing nets spread over backwaters in this part of Kerala. Enjoy steamed tapioca along with a special preparation of karimeen or pearl spot that is freshly caught and cooked with masala wrapped in plantain leaf, right before you.

Visit River side Temples, church,
Kerala has churches dating from the time of St. Thomas – the apostle who arrived here in 70 AD; temples that sport the Dravidian gopuram & Kerala style of Architecture as well as the oldest mosque & synagogue in the country, many these are located along the backwaters.

Spot a variety of Birds 
The backwaters are alive with a variety of birds. Watch egrets, herons & kingfisher sunning them or swooping in to catch a fish. Kumarakom & Kadalundi are favorite haunts of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, teals, darters etc.

Observe the Chinese Way of Fishing
Take a trip along the Kochi or Kayamkulam backwaters and watch fishermen tug at huge cantilevered nets with its rich haul. The Chinese fishing nets that billow from the court of Kublai Khan, the Mongolian King.

Alleppey backwater cuisine
Sadhya – literally meaning the feast is served on festive occasions. This complete vegetarian feast is served in plantain leaf with more than 14 dishes, savouries, pickles finally topped with the most popular dessert called “payasam” – a porridge like sweet cooked in milk.

Karumadikuttan: - (3 km east of Ambalappuzha) Many fascinating legends are associated with this 11th century statue of Lord Buddha, protected by the State Archaeological Department.

Chambakulam Church: - The St. Mary’s Church one of the oldest church in Kerala is said to be built by St. Thomas.

Chambakulam Local Market: - near to the Chambakulam Church, there is a handicraft making centre, cloths & some shops. It is village town ship.
